[Fastly DNS](https://www.fastly.com/documentation/guides/platform/fastly-dns/about-fastly-dns/) is our authoritative DNS service that leverages Fastly's global, high-performance edge network to serve DNS query responses. Fastly DNS supports the primary-secondary DNS architecture, which requires you to store and manage your primary “source of truth” DNS records elsewhere. By adding DNS zones, you configure your primary DNS service to add Fastly as a secondary provider. Once delegated at your domain name registrar, Fastly DNS can serve your domains' authoritative responses.

## Prerequisites and considerations

Keep in mind the following prerequisites and considerations:

- To purchase Fastly DNS, you must have a Service Order for [Fastly's Full-Site Delivery](https://docs.fastly.com/products/fastlys-full-site-delivery) or [Fastly's Streaming Delivery](https://docs.fastly.com/products/fastlys-streaming-delivery) or have purchased one of our [packaged offerings](https://www.fastly.com/package-entitlements).
- Fastly DNS is not a primary DNS service. You must store and manage your primary DNS records outside Fastly. Whichever service you use must support [zone transfers (AXFR)](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc5936) in order to sync records with Fastly.
- In line with security best practices, Fastly recommends using TSIG (Transaction Signature) keys for cryptographically securing zone transfers.
- DNSSEC and non-standard record types (like ALIAS or CNAME flattening) are not supported.
- Incremental zone transfers (IXFR) are not supported.
- IPv6 is supported for DNS query resolution, but not for zone transfers.

## Billing

Billing for Fastly DNS is based on the number of DNS query responses provided by Fastly in units of 1 million query responses. Consider setting a \[spend alert]\(https://www.fastly.com/documentation/guides/account-info/billing/about-the-spend-alert-page/) for your account to automatically be notified when your month-to-date bill approaches or meets a specific dollar amount.
